The problem is, I can't find the actual lyrics anywhere. What I do find is strange phonetics instead. Here then, I'm posting what I *think* are the lyrics:

(Please write me if you can figure out any of the lyrics I got wrong)

Nothing left to lose,
I'll see you when you come,
We'll talk it over then.
The calm before the storm,
I never was expecting you until it passes.

Night falls on my tears(?), still know where it made something I believe.

I know the rain is where you shine, but nothing can compare to when the wind is in your hair.

Now we're each with something new, it drives me crazy you don't know it's all about you.

There's someone standing there, beside you it's not me - No More Windows

Confessions of a user:

Lately, I've been feeling increasingly the corporate crush of Microsoft. With the advent of Vista, I, as a common user, have finally been prodded to try something really different.

Mac, you say? Well, after the flexibility and malleability of Windows, the Mac struck me as a little too one-stop-shopping. It's expensive, too.

Enter Linux, or more specifically Linux's easy-to-use GUI (graphical user interface) avatar Ubuntu. As I am by no means a geek, the thought of Linux by itself threw me a little. Ubuntu, however, looks to solve the issue of user-friendliness for those of us who have never written code.

Oh, and did I mention it's free? Not free as in "Trial Period," but completely open-sourced here-ya-go forever free.

In fact, this current iteration of Linux may indeed be a viable alternative to Monsterlith XP or Visa. I intend to find this out.

Installation:

Wow. That was easy. Anticlimactic, in fact. See, Ubuntu can be installed several ways, one of which is an ISO file that you can download and burn to a boot disk. But I couldn't get my HP laptop to see the ISO file upon booting, even after setting the CMOS/BIOS to boot from the CD first. Dang! Was there something even easier out there?

As it turns out, Ubuntu has a Windows-based down-loadable installer called WUBI

So, after cleaning up my Windows installation by eliminating junk files and defragmenting, I ran the installer. Ubuntu commenced installing itself on a 15G partition on the hard drive. Note to self: remember absolutely the username and password you set up in the installer - it's case sensitive. That cost me a re-install. Also remember to hit F8 every time Ubuntu restarts, so that you can go to the OS (Operating System) choices menu and select Ubuntu rather than Windows XP.

So here I sit looking at a clean and elegant desktop - reminiscent of a Windows desktop yet with differences. There was no start button in the lower left hand side, and there were three menu items in the upper left hand side: Applications, Places and System.

Ubuntu sees my laptop wireless hardware and connects immediately. Nice.

First task: change desktop image: open Firefox, go to Top Gear, and grab lovely picture of BMW M3. Right click and select. Done. Intuitive as can be.

About this time a small orange icon in the upper right hand side indicates that I have updates. Excellent! Turns out I have 89 updates - everything from music players to security protocols.

That's where I sit now - watching these update. I'll start soon on the next step, which is actually using the OS, and then furthermore using the OS with programs I'll actually need.

Stay tuned...

My friend bought a hybrid and...

I do have to giggle when I see folks pay a $5000 or $10,000 premium for hybrid vehicles. See, automobile emissions are 15% of the total manmade CO2, which is only 3-4% of the total CO2 produced yearly. If *everyone* got out of their cars and simply stopped driving, mankind’s CO2 would still be, well, around 3% of the total CO2 produced. The idea that a hybrid car, or even millions of hybrid cars, somehow makes a difference in CO2 emissions is beautifully laughable.

Hybrid cars. Carbon offsets. Florescent light bulbs, for f*** sake! It’s all marketing.

But there’s one born every minute, you know.

The *best* part of it is: CO2 is *not* the principle greenhouse gas. Water vapor is! By a huge margin!

And *that* only works if you assume that our planet’s temperature is going up because of a greenhouse effect and NOT because of increased solar energy – like Mars’ temperature is and Neptune’s temperature is and all of the other planets in our solar system are!

And all of THIS is only if you make the arrogant assumption that somehow the current temperature is, for whatever reason, the optimum temperature of planet Earth – of all of the temperatures throughout this planet’s history! Some much higher and some much lower.

Wait, wait! There’s MORE. You must then make the stupefyingly arrogant assumption that we can somehow *change it back!*

And then I see and I read Pelosi telling us that GW is coming, and that our salvation is giving her power. Power to tax. Power to regulate.

Predictable….

Listening to Bad Religion...

Maybe you loaned me your car in good faith, and I wrecked it, leaving you without a way to get to work. But I don’t give a crap, because I’m rebellious.

Maybe you needed comforting in your darkest hour, and I tried, I really tried for a little while, but ultimately couldn’t be bothered to do much, because, you see, I’m rebellious.

I wanna live in your house, eat your food, stink up your bathroom, spend your money and expect you to listen to every low-birthrate idea I have as if it’s the gospel, all while I call you every name in the book, because I’m rebellious.

Yeah, that was your little sister I experimented on last night, and even while she cried tears of blood to you as you begged her to go to the doctor, the embarrassing pain kept her locked in her room. At the helm is none other than Jack Bauer, again, pushing the vehicle full tilt and operating a cell phone with one hand and steering, navigating and computing with the other, again. The vehicle is badly damaged. So too is Bauer, again.

“Chloe! Damn it! What the hell happened back there?!” (And 2 ½ million shots of vodka disappear across the collegiate countryside.)

In a private room in CTU, Chloe, at a computer screen, responds with characteristic understatement, “Jack we’re still working on it. It looks as if you’ve been ambushed.”

“You think?! Everyone was full auto, and we held them with what we had but, Chloe, these people were trained and they were well armed. Military weaponry. Right now I’m guessing Hassan’s men. Only he had the resources to put together something like this so quickly.” Bauer grimaces as he stares out the windshield. There’s blood coming from his mouth – bright red.

Jack slams the dash. “Damn it!” In a hundred colleges, more vodka disappears. Then more quietly, “Chloe, I’m a mess. I got real lucky back there.”

“Also, Chloe, tell Buchannan that there was someone else there, too. I think he’s the reason that I’m still here. I have no idea who he was or where he came from, but he was definitely a pro, maybe military. We’re getting help from someone.”

Buchannan leans in over the speaker phone, behind Chloe: “That’s a negative, Jack. This is a completely black operation (again!). You’re operating on your own, and without the consent or the support of the President on this one (again!). We’d definitely know if one of the other agencies was involved.”

“No! That’s not what I mean! I can’t tell you much about him, but he was European, probably British from what I heard when he shouting. He was good, Bill, and he kept this op alive. We need to find out who or what he was all about.”

“I’ll get with Intelligence and see if they can advise on any friendly foreign ops dealing with Hassan that may have crossed over our borders.”

Chloe interjects, “Jack, we’re starting to see some security footage of what happened.”

What they saw was Bauer huddled behind his truck (again) with said truck slowly transmogrifying to junk as the bullets riddled it. Two security guards lay dead. Near an industrial and drab looking building approached a phalanx of gunmen, all firing. Their weapons were powerful, judging by the recoil, and the truck – though armored – didn’t stand a chance. Bauer was already hit once.

Next they saw what Chloe would later describe as a systematic dispatch of a superior force using tactics, luck and small arms. One of the gunmen – the one lagging the others - went down, fired upon obviously from behind. Only one of the phalanx noticed, turned to see what happened, then turned again to notify his squad mates. He went down before he could accomplish this. Now, five were down to three. As those three went turned to assess just what the hell happened, Bauer returned fire from the direction they were no longer facing. Down went another. At this point it looked as if someone were trying to communicate with the remaining gunmen. Bauer and his unknown ally took advantage of the ensuing confusion to kill the remaining two.

They only got one brief glimpse of the rescuer as he crossed behind the truck to help Bauer in. He was male and athletic. Chloe could not make out any features, but… was that blond hair?

Bauer coughed into the phone, “And Bill?”

“Yes, Jack. We’re here.”

“He’d been drinking. A lot."

Hey, it could happen.

Where the Hell is Matt?

This has been floating around the internet for awhile, but it's still beautiful to me.

When I first watched it, I initially thought it was a joke. the proposed wall between the US and Mexico to the Berlin Wall.

There's one critical, critical difference.

The Berlin Wall was built to keep the people in.

The more I think about this, the more offensive the Mexican government's protestations become to me. Let's see: the wall is built on our property, paid for by us, maintained by us, and certainly represents no overt danger to Mexico. So, why doesn't Fox simply come out and say it: we need your money and your land, and we want to send our criminals to you. Our own country is a basket-case, and we have neither the ability nor the inclination to do anything about it.

Put this issue on a micro scale. Say you want to put a fence on your own property - your home for example. But, your next neighbor takes you to court to tear it down. Furthermore, let's go on to say that his argument to the court for tearing down your fence is that it will prevent him from driving across your lawn.

While the above is a ham-fisted analogy, it does illustrate to me how absurd Mexico's shrill arguments are. While we on this side can make all kinds of arguments about why we don't like the fence - it will cost too much, it won't be effective, or maybe that's just not what the United States is all about (no person is illegal!) - those arguments sound less genuine when they come from the other side of the border, which is why they aren't really making those arguments. Instead, they'll trot out more lofty words like "offense" and "shameful."

Diffuse words like those sound a lot better than we want your money, your land, and succor for our criminals.
Europe is in Trouble: Part I

First in a continuing series on Europe, and how it is in trouble regarding her culture and freedom:

Spaniards Tone Down...

It's innocent stuff now, but one cannot help but have the feeling that innocent stuff will soon transmogrify to other more profound areas of behavior. Already, anyone there can utterly desecrate any religious thought (practically speaking) that anyone may hold sacred, with the exception of one.

Can anyone possibly think that adherents to said religion will not notice and consequently use this fact politically, culturally, and ultimately in the balance of power? Dave Perkins warns that this balance of power shift will culminate in one last democratic vote - the last of that will ever matter.

Hat Tip to Big Dave Perkins, via LGF.

Spanish 101

I love this article, in which Mexico urges Bush to veto the U.S. border fence bill.

For those of you who may not speak Spanish, I'll trnaslate some of the more cogent passages:

"The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly backed a bill on Friday to put up about 700 miles of fence, a project Republicans hope will impress voters calling for tougher immigration control ahead of November 7 congressional elections."

Translation: because enough people in the middle are now calling for our collective heads, we are temporarily giving up pandering to business owners on the right and immigrant voter drives on the left.

"This decision hurts bilateral relations, goes against the spirit of cooperation needed to guarantee security on the common border, creates a climate of tension in border communities..."

Translation: now that we might not be able to send our criminals over to you, and now that our NUMBER ONE (!!!) source of income might dry up, what the hell are we supposed to do? You don't expect us to make our country a place where people can actually make a living, do you?

"Mexicans are livid about the fence plan, which is seen as a slap in the face to efforts during Fox's near-completed six-year term to come to an agreement with Washington on immigration."

Translation: Mexicans still stuck in Mexico are pissed.

"Partial measures focused exclusively on security ignore reality and represent ... a political answer rather than a viable solution to this problem...,"

Translation: We really don't like the fact that we can't send our criminals over, and that our main income may dry up.

"U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Shannon said: "We need to know who's coming across our borders and after years of not paying that much attention to the frontier ... we are now attempting to come to terms with it."

Translation: Maybe those parochial slobs in the United States didn't like seeing rallies where people from another country, waving the flag of another country and speaking a foreign language, demanded money and land from our country. Although already married with three children and reportedly living off £700 a month in state benefits, the 31-year-old is seeking more wives, with the intention of fathering more than nine children."

700 a month from the taxpayers, nine children - all state supported. And this clown goes on to say later in this article that there is nothing but Islam. Think about it: all of this guy's productivity goes not toward helping anyone, or creating anything useful, but instead bringing down the very culture that provides him succor.

To me, one of the definitions of societal suicide is when you pay people to overthrow you. You can rest assured that all of the children in this man's household will grow up very Islamic and likely very anti-Western. If a society does enough of this, they'll subsidize their own demise, as they depleate their own resources and enrich and bolster their enemy's.

This highlights Milton Friedman's idea that you can't have open immigration and a welfare state. I've said it before and I still say it: Europe is in trouble.

Stupid Bumper Stickers

Phat Phree is up-in-arms over those arcane and vaguely pretentious ovate stickers on the back of cars.

Emu Phillips Says:

"I'm a great lover... type='text'>"Congratulations on making partner...."

About once a month I find a news story somewhere which was designed to publicize (and, of course, embarrass) ExxonMobil as one of the few big companies left in America that do not offer gay partner benefits.

Here's this month's installment, courtesy of al-Reuters.

It's the old Chinese water torture, I guess... no single story makes any real impact, but over time, the drip drip drip of the news might shame the old boys into stepping up. We journalists are just humbly doing our part to change the world for the better, you know.

As an ExxonMobil stockholder, allow me to state the obvious:

ExxonMobil is not in any way obligated to give spousal benefits to distant relatives, close friends, pets, favorite cars, bridge partners, dance partners, law partners or gay partners.

Benefits are not obligatory, just good business practice for getting and keeping high quality employees.

And let's face it, you can't marry your dog, your Corvette, your bowling team or a person of the same sex as you. None of those things is marriage. Benefits are for employees, their spouses and their kids.

And if they DO give benefits to "partners", will the partners then be required to prove they're having sex?

After all, if I ever get divorced I'll probably live with a roommate to save money. Couldn't I then say, "it's totally unfair for those two gay guys to share corporate benefits when I can't. have a roommate too, we share expenses, we plan for the future, the only thing we don't do is have sex with each other. That's unfair and discriminatory!"

Such a case is coming, folks, and it won't be long. And they'll probably win.

Giving benefits to gay partners opens the door, and soon everyone who lives with or shares expenses with anyone is going to demand them, and might get them, STARTING with hetero couples who live together but have not made the commitment of marriage. And there are LOTS of those.

This will be expensive, and it will prove to be one more good reason for marriage that has gone by the wayside.

You do realize they've already successfully altered the meaning of "gay". It used to mean "lighthearted, happy". Now they want to make "marriage" mean whatever anyone wants it to mean. Which of course is how a word ends up meaning nothing at all.

What's next? A "waltz" in 4/4 time? A "water heater" that makes water colder? Hey, why not market a "sugar free" soft drink that's loaded with sugar? They're only words, after all, and they can mean whatever we want them to mean.... right?

Or maybe we'll have a "religion of peace" whose practitioners commit mass murder and slaughter and bloodshed and--

Oh, wait. So what happens when the sensationalism of these attacks isn't enough? What happens when we can't change the channel?

Two things will happen: the CBS'ers will step up their attacks till they indeed hit a trip wire, and that trip wire will be a historical spasm.

Tony Blankly said that history comes in fits and spasms: Pearl Harbor, and the assasination of Archduke Ferdinand, for example. The United States has historically been slow to react in the face of growing historical pressures, and usually only really swings hard at the ball after such a spasm. I think that CBS attackers have in general purposely avoided attacks in the US in order to avoid that spasm.

My fear is what this next spasm will bring. Notwithstanding the rantings of many of the left, who say that we are imperialists and that we are actively trying to take over whatever, we really do have enormous and historically unprecedented destructive capability. If we were really, really mad, I shudder to think what could happen.

After Pearl Harbor, Yamamoto feared that Japan had awaken a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve. The next time we won't need to wake up. We'll just be watching TV.

Note to Gloria Steinem

Has anyone wver thought about asking the fish if he'd like a bicycle? great idea for a nightly talking head show.

It stars Christopher Hitchens and the Ixman (hey - it's my blog). We'll feature the usual topical interview roundup as most everyone else. The catch is that all guests must have had 4 beers (or the equivalent of some other adult beverage) before they go on screen.

Don't you think we'd learn a whole lot more about our guests if they were under a more induced state, temporarily free from their, er, constraints? I bet, for example, that George Will would be completely different, and altogether more interesting, after a few Shiners. Wouldn't you love to hear Rosie try to defend some of her more assinine statements after she - oh wait - you'd not be able to tell the difference there. But you see my point. Don't even get me started on Mel Gibson.

The beauty of this format is that the principal interviewers - Hitch and I - would be more or less unaffected, as we are only just getting started at 4!

We could have a cool little counter or meter across the bottom of the screen which would show the number of drinks thus far consumed. Of course we could turn that to a digital counter for popular figures like John Daly or Keith Richards.

This is ideal for HBO, as the language would be scorching and the topics - to say the least - broad.

UPDATE: Thank you Insty readers and Instapundit! Killed her.

As she lay dying she said "I forgive, I forgive".

Wanna know what an actual martyr looks like? Killed for her religion, forgave her killers with her last breath.

That's a martyr, in the tradition of Christ's apostles, of Christ Himself when he said "forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do".

I can't help wondering if Jesus would implore God on behalf of violent militant Islam with the same plea of ignorance. Do these people know what they do? Are they so convinced that God Himself wants them to murder innocents, or are they just giving in to the temptation of striking out in anger at the visible superiority of the West over Islamic society? Are they men of God or just angry young men using the cover of religion to justify their rage?

There is the metaphorical advice given by Jesus that says you will be able to tell the nature of a tree by the fruit it bears. Clearly the fruit of the tree of fundamentalist Islam is threats, fear, terror, murder... and even a non-Christian modern American something-ist has to ask himself, "is this the kind of fruit that the tree called God would be growing? If there's a God, would He be the kind of God who would tell angry young men to murder people in His name?"

It's been a dozen years or more since an abortion doctor was shot by a nut calling himself a Christian. Whenever that happens in this country, Christian organizations across America make statements denouncing that action and saying it isn't part of Christian doctrine to murder people who don't toe the Christian line.

It's been, oh, a couple of hours since an innocent person was murdered in the name of Islam... anyone heard any blanket denouncements of violence in the prophet's name by mainstream moderate ordinary whitebread Islam?

Me neither.

If you're so inclined, say a prayer for Sister Leonella.

HT Michelle Malkin.

Wow.... I wouldn't myself have tasked Mr Clarke with that, nor would I have trusted the CIA to get that right, even a tiny thing like that, because they've always got everything else wrong. The CIA continues to say there can't have been a connection, because if one was ever proved - and there's a great deal of evidence for it - they would look stupid. Because they always said, not just that it wasn't there. Do observe this distinction. They said it couldn't be there. They said, by definition, Saddam Hussein could not help Islamic terrorists because his regime was supposedly secular. Now that to anyone who knows anything about Iraq is sheer fatuity. There is an overarching analysis as well that, to some extent, puts these matters of linkage in perspective. When one examined the situation, and realised that al-Qaeda and its co-thinkers have been incubated by what was, in effect, a political slum in the Middle East, which we've been letting rot and decay for far too long and, therefore, it would be a good thing to begin some slum clearance in the region. This meant turning the Pakistani Government from a sympathiser of the Taliban to at least, neutrality. It meant taking away their Afghan colony from them. That's what they've been treating Afghanistan as being. It meant warning the Saudi Arabians we knew what they were doing; it meant undercutting their oil monopoly, by trying to liberate the oil fields of Iraq. And it meant removing the most outstanding supporter of terrorism and jihadism in the region, who was a man with whom we in any case had a political rendezvous. A man who should have been removed from power in 1991. So if you could get over your obsession with this idea that there were invented linkages, you would see there is a broader intersection of argument that favours regime change in the Middle East.

TONY JONES: I understand Christopher Hitchens...

CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS: Excuse me, they would have made maintenance of the status quo much more dangerous.

TONY JONES: I understand what you're saying but the claim of Richard Clarke and others.

CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS: Which you really obviously won't let go of, will you?

Heh.

For my first post..... :-)

Something non-controversial, because heaven knows I don't like to stir the pot....

Men are more intelligent than women!

Signed,

Ixman's secret older brother Racer Ix

Pierre Rehov's "Suicide Killers"

I only recently stumbled upon this interview with Pierre Rehov, a movie maker who takes a decidely un-pc slant on the Middle East. He maintains, among other things, that sexual repression, a constant diet of religion, and systematic poverty generate suicide bombers like a factory:

Q - Is there a suicide bomber personality profile? Describe the psychopathology.

A - Generally kids between 15 and 25 bearing a lot of complexes, generally inferiority complexes. They must have been fed with religion. They usually have a lack of developed personality. Usually they are impressionable idealists. In the western world they would easily have become drug addicts, but not criminals. Interestingly, they are not criminals since they don'tsee good and evil the same way that we do. If they had been raised in an Occidental culture, they would have hated violence. But they constantly battle against their own death anxiety. The only solution to this deep-seated pathology is to be willing to die and be rewarded in the after-life in Paradise.

This did worry me, however:

Q - Do all Muslims interpret jihad and martyrdom in the same way?

A - All Muslim believers believe that, ultimately, Islam will prevail on earth. They believe this is the only true religion and there is no room, in their mind, for interpretation. The main difference between moderate Muslims and extremists is that moderate Muslims don't think they will see theabsolute victory of Islam during their lifetime, therefore they respect other beliefs.. The extremists believe that the fulfillment of the Prophecy of Islam and ruling the entire world as described in the Koran, is for today. Each victory of Bin Laden convinces 20 million moderate Muslims to become extremists.

I'd certainly like some of the more devout Muslims to tune in and convince me that this is not so.

Let's see what you're REALLY made of. Part One

You know, Madonna - and really just about any popular "edgy" performer - has been hammering on Christianity for so long that her schtick has gone long beyond banal, way past stale, and deep, deep into comical territory. I was around for her first performances, when she was shoving crucifixes in her rectum or whatever, and for her '90's rehash of the same (along with her dog squatting), and I get to see it all again front and center on the Drudge Report .

I'm not really mad or anything (remember that I said that it was comical), I'm just making an observation of sorts: Madonna et. al. are real good at kicking those who don't kick back. For all of the talk about oppression this and scandal that, the Catholics, and Christians in general, are really pretty safe targets. There's really nothing very envelope busting (or fearless, as she would have us believe) about her whole act.

But, you know what would show me she's fearless? Why doesn't she come out against honor killings or genital mutilation, or a whole slew of barbaric acts as practiced by - let's face it - largely adherents of another very popular and powerful world religion? By come out against I mean of course openly mock, much as she does with Christianity. Imagine the fun she could have with chadoors! Burqa Burlesque anyone?

Why indeed?Because - and I say this without a hint of glee or irony - she knows that in all liklihood she would be, uh, held accountable for what she says and does. I don't mean held accountable in a social justice way or anything like that, and don't say that fact is a good thing (remember that this is just an observation). No, Madonna and her ilk will gladly crap on Christ because deep down they know that they won't face the same repercussions that some other artists have who were openly critical of the Religion of Peace.

C'mon, Madonna, I want real edginess. I want you to do what artists always say that they do and put it on the line for your art! Think about it: all of the major religions have atrocities and some bad will in their past, yet the so called cutting edge of progressive thought concentrates almost exclusively on one religion and neglects the other main religion. Both bad, yet you dis(cuss) only one?

I realize the reason for a lot of this is the fact that the aforementioned artists are commenting on the culture they grew up in, but every damn artist I hear spouting off on the radio or TV refers to himself or herself at least tangentially as an agent of change for good. Yet nobody will comment at all about a culture which - to a large degree - still has large groups who won't let women drive. Let me rephrase that: nobody in the artist community with anything at stake, openly critical of our culture (the very one they just whored themselves out to to get hugh piles of cash) , and mostly from the political left will say anything.

But hell, even after Parker and Stone (and the Comedy Channel) gleefully proclaimed "ha ha, the joke's on you - we were satarizing," the quiet fact remains that they did not show Mohammed, and in fact they never will. None of these established artists will. And they won't because they're just an act - rich, comfortable, and afraid.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ixmanmortgage.blogspot.com/2006/09/lets-see-what-youre-really-made-of_02.html' title='Let's see what you're REALLY made of. Part II - Everclear

ART ALEXAKIS was on O'reilly the other day, supposedly being grilled by Bill on his new video "Hater," which is dedicated to Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and all others who hate in the name of Jesus.

OK, I'll agree with Art's nominal premise that anyone who hates in the name of Jesus is, uh, evil. But in this video, Art was clearly using provacative imagery designed to offend Christians in general. And why not? It's a safe target, and by now really quite a banal message. Yet I'm sure in his mind he can claim some sort of solidarity with somebody somewhere who whines about all of that "oppression" and "hate" by televangalists (not that their liberty or freedoms were actually impinged by said televangelists).

It's the same as I mentioned before in this blog: people like Art, and bands like Everclear (and others) will absolutely - for a buck - wipe their ass with anything that people will hold sacred - as long as those people won't in any way threaten them! I am absolutely positive his tune would (literally) change if he were asked to write about another major religion that has proponents who absolutely preach hate - and then follow through on that hate.

So c'mon, Art. Let's see a video with some loser walking the streets who is obviously Mohammed. Make sure you show him drinking, whoring, and just generally doing mean and crass things. While you're at it, sing some cute little song about how maybe folks shouldn't blow shit up in his name.

Don't worry, I already know your answer. I'm sure it will have something to do with your artistic freedom this, and your creative license that, and our problems really come from some amorphous "religion in general," and oh by the way the whole Islamic terrorism thing is not your bag and blah blah blah.

And I know why that's your answer, like all of the other lickspittles in the "edgy" music world: you're all PUSSIES! Limpwristed, feckless, fearfull, fat PUSSIES.

Ah, well. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm sure that, in his mind, Art feels like he's a bold defender of...something.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ixmanmortgage.blogspot.com/2006/09/lets-see-what-youre-really-made-of.html' title='Let's see what you're REALLY made of. A really cool game. But it’s also an instructive one, too. Gran Turismo has track representations and driving dynamics that range from pretty-darn-close to virtually spot on (okay, except for the whole crashing with no damage thing). So much so that I think there’s a definite training element to the game. Certainly, with repetitive use on highly accurate simulations of world famous racing tracks, a small part of me, tiny though it is, actually navigates and learns their braking points, turns, and apexes.

So, as I navigated the sacred Nurburgring for what was probably the 300th time (virtually) from the air conditioned comfort of my living room, I remembered one of the best episodes of Britain’s best imports since Monty Python – Top Gear. In it, Jeremy Clarkson takes a diesel Jaguar and flogs it around the ‘Ring to increasingly better lap times. Seems when he started, his times were, uh, average. Then, after repeated laps, he got off a lap under ten minutes - respectable in a diesel, even if it is a Jag. The ‘Ring matron, a rather hot looking lady who drives a van around the course faster than a lot of sports cars (and their male sports car drivers), managed 9 minutes 12 seconds.

The thought occurred to me: what if all of that learning curve could be accomplished in simulation? How would a complete piker such as myself do right out of the gate on the real Nurburgring? I’ve had some basic – very basic – racing and autocross experience, but I’m nowhere near a ringer of any kind, and I’ve never even been to Germany. Nonetheless, with practice on the simulated ‘Ring, I’ve cut my lap times markedly, much in the manner real drivers do – by learning the course. And, by learning the car.

Ah yes, the car. In Top Gear, Jeremy uses an S-Type Jaguar Diesel, and Gran Turismo 4 does not feature such a car in its lineup. It does however have a BMW 120d Sport, a car which, while excoriated by Clarkson, does at least have similar performance characteristics. It’s acceleration looks to be a little better, but it’s top speed a little lower. One is a BMW, the other a Jag – both meant to handle, albeit the Beemer will likely be more tossable.

So, a while back before this idea came about, I remember posting a 10 minute and 12 second run round the course in the 120d with very little knowledge of the simulated ‘Ring on the first go. With practice, that is now in the low 9’s.

I’m better primarily because of the acquired knowledge of the Nordschlieffe, of course. Now, how would that knowledge play in real life? I feel like I know the ‘Ring, or at least Sony’s fantastically accurate representation of the ‘Ring like the back of my hand. Could I indeed drive out on the course and drive it like I knew what I was doing?

So, what about it? I put it to the blokes at Top Gear (or Sony, for matter) to hold an experiment like this. I’ll even volunteer, heh. We could take a safe but acceptably fast and handling-oriented car, and three drivers: a top notch driver with experience and knowledge of the ‘Ring, a control subject, and me, or someone who has done what I’ve done with Gran Turismo 4. The control subject would be someone who has about as much experience as me, and has not seen the course, virtually or otherwise.

Ultimately, I maintain that the test subject will outperform the control subject by a significant margin, such that the test subject may approach the top notch driver in ability more so than the control driver, at least on this track. I assume clear weather conditions, and a modicum of driver skill all the way around, of course.

I’m not sure if a test like this would really prove anything, other than that it’s interesting. It may on the other hand give inspiration to thousands of committed GT4 junkies who may now fret that those hours at the PS2 will never amount to anything. Those junkies may then be able to take solace in the fact that GT4 has been officially certified as an educational tool.

Bob Brooks
December 2005

The Crushing Blow!

One of the best bands in history - Hurra Torpedo - has a blog!

You will remember them of course as the group who performed what is arguably the most moving and nuanced version of Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart.

To quote someone on the net: "...an excellent use of kitchen appliances and butt cracks."

Ixman

Gateway Pundit gives us a nice way to start a campaign based upon spreading freedom and Democracy around the world. Tax freedom day is April 17 i.e. the work you put in at your job (where, let's face it, you don't necessarily want to be, right?) goes toward paying off the government rather than paying you. Factor in (sometimes needless) government regulation, and you're right up there at the half a year mark to support your government. Not to take anything away from those in our country's past who really endured slavery, but working half a year for someone else because you have to seems to me dangerously close to the definition of slavery itself.

OK, you want real tax reform?

We should have four and only four taxes: Federal, State, County, and City consumption taxes. Concurrent with that we must outlaw all other taxes. These other taxes include all fees and hidden taxes that show up on everything from stock transactions to power bills to automobile transactions. Indeed, the average person might be shocked if he/she saw just how many of these little fees there were, and just what they cost. If we don't outlaw all other taxes, they'll show up again in addition to the four consumption taxes. It will start "only on the rich" as we are told by politicians. But, "only on the rich" inevitably means "coming your way, soon" for everyone else.

See, with just four taxes, everyone knows exactly what his or her government costs. States would be free to compete with each other with tax rates. For example, if Texas had a state consumption rate of 8.25%, and California's was at 15%, then citizens (customers?) deciding where to live between the two would have something very real to think about in addition to all of the usual considerations. Of course, we can say that now, but the actual taxation from state to state is almost impossible to compare, with all of the millions and millions (OK, not really...) of levies and taxes and fees that are charged from state to state. The same is true for counties and cities.

I'm talking ultimately about honesty in taxation, which we in the US do not have right now, in effect if not technically. Again, the average person has no idea what he's really paying.

Would this change mean that we can get rid of the IRS ? Sadly, no. Consumption taxes might be quite easy to get around for the tax scofflaw. Ultimately, we'd need an IRS to ensure, among other things, that Donald Trump still pays tax even when he buys his Gulfstream in Switzerland. We'd also have real decisions to make about exemptions for certain products and taxation of the internet and the secondary market.

But this type of taxation is at least a giant step in the right direction, because it increases the aforementioned honesty tenfold and (and this is hugely important) because it dismantles a tremendous amount of the political class' power. Sadly, this last fact is more than anything else what dooms a simple consumption tax.

Friday evening. We can talk about best selling pretty easily, as that type of thing is easily measured. It’s also (relatively) easy to discuss technical proficiency and popularity, and those things have been done ad infinitum on the web.

But what about overall coolness? Is that defined just by how much a given listener likes a song, or how much a whole lot of people like or have liked said song? Or, are there more important intangible properties? E.g. I can recognize that the Eagle’s Hotel California is a cool song, even though I don’t like it very much. I guess that impact constitutes a lot of what coolness means – both the impact of the song as well as the person performing it. Elvis made some pretty silly stuff very cool just by singing it, and some of the Beatle’s material is so damn good that any reasonably good remake still has coolness. Then again, I’m sure we are all aware of out-of-the-way hole-in-the-wall groups, known to a very few, who have had little impact on music in general, but who are just so darn cool. But, I can’t speak to those, as I don’t know about them – you do ;) .

Longevity means a lot, but isn’t everything, or even most. Happy Birthday and New York, New York have both been around a long time, but you can guess which one is the cool one. Have you noticed that some pieces come and go, to return again with a new generation with renewed popularity? That’s pretty cool.
