Friday evening. Time for Bass

Ahhh, Bass Ale. I will admit that it has been some time since I've enjoyed Bass Ale. If memory serves - one of the best imported pales I've ever indulged.

However, I must ask - when you say is this the best beer ever? Are you suggesting that "YES" this is the best beer ever or are you asking does anyone else think this is the best beer ever?

Either way I must chime in and defend US craft brews or micros. Now, of course some micros (and indeed I will recommend one here) have begun to be produced on much larger scales, but some did have and some still do - have humble origins.

Namely, for me, SIERRA NEVADA. Because, when I think of your question, Best Beer Ever, I think if I had no other choice, which beer would I choose? For me that answer would be Sierra. For you that may be Bass, for others (and lets hope not) that may be Miller Lite or for Gods Sake! MGD.

Sierra Nevada is of cousre not for all. It does have a crisp hop finish and as a hop head as far as beer - this is the preferred taste.

Anyway my rant ends with the advice to keep a varity in your diet and always choose a new selection when in front of the beer cooler/shelve.

Sierra Nevada, eh?

I'll get that tonight. But, since we're being homers, I'll chime in for the masterful St. Arnold's Summer Pils. I can't detect the flavor on the finish of this beer (clover?), but it is perfect for these long hot days.

That said, *is* there a large-brewery american beer that's any good? I haven't tried these new "world" beers by Budwieser and the like.

"World Select" from our friends at the brewery on the East Loop, is sort of a Euro-style pils. Big deal. If I wanted a pils, I'll get a Pilsener Urquell, or better, a Czechvar. Yes, a Czechvar is probably the better choice, since AB made them change their name.

It is never a good idea to settle on any one beer as the "best" as there are so many out there, and so little time in which to survey the possibilities. SNPA is right tasty, as are many American Pale Ales, but the Sierra Nevada folks strike a fine balance between hops and malt that keeps the drinker coming back for more. There are many other examples of beers that have this, "Man! That was good! I am gonna need another one of those!" qualities.

"Vive la Difference" said the old Frenchman. Follow his sage advice!
